Following the announcement of two new A-League expansion clubs on Thursday afternoon, Football Coaches Australia (FCA) Chief Executive Officer Glenn Warry has offered the following remarks for distribution and publication:

“Football Coaches Australia is delighted that the FFA Board has formally made the decision to expand the A-League and we offer a particular congratulations to the bid teams of Western Melbourne Group and Macarthur South West Sydney.”

“We are under no illusions that the sport has been through a difficult phase in recent years. However, these two new teams are part of the incredibly exciting future that we believe lies ahead for the game in the country.”

“We know that both bid teams feature many ‘football people’, all of who appreciate the vital role of coaches in the sport. We look forward to working with both of the new clubs as they put together their coaching, technical development and academy structures.”

“While today is a day of great celebration, it should also give us pause to consider the bigger picture, with several well-credentialled bids unsuccessful at this stage. They should not be lost to the Australian football landscape.”

“Clearly, it is time to examine the feasibility of a National Second Division. We welcome the opportunity to be part of a working group that is committed to bringing this vision to life. Not only is a new second tier urgently needed for the greater health of the sport, but it will instantaneously enhance career opportunities for existing coaches and create new pathways for the elite coaches of tomorrow.”
